I will be presenting at the upcoming AMTA Chapter Meeting at PMTI, 5028 Wisconsin Ave NW, suite LL, Washington DC, on May 20th, 2012 from 3:30 to 6:30 PM. I will be speaking about my recent research findings and how it relates to the challenges DC LMTs currently face due to changes in the local Massage Establishment regulations.
This presentation will have two parts that interrelate. In the first part, I will briefly present the results of my research study, “How Massage Therapists Accomplish a Whole Session”. This qualitative study explored how MTs from our area constructed their work from start to finish. The study was framed assuming that massage therapists, and those who study our work, need more foundational understanding about how we work. I found that although the MTs worked primarily in biomechanical way, their work was equally composed of elements that relied on other factors including relationship and setting.
My findings speak directly to the situation that DC LMTs today face in regards to the District’s recently enacted Massage Establishment Law. Therefore, the second part of my presentation will consider the ramifications of the new regulations in light of the different ways we work and the quickly changing orientation of our profession. We will segue into a discussion about what we need to do about the regulatory situation in order to protect our practice environment. This will continue into the Chapter business meeting.
